stamp art - religeous cross

                                                                         Detail of The Cross

These collages are made from hundreds, and in some cases well over a thousand, individually cut-out postage stamps from all over the world.

The date of the stamps range from the early 1900′s to present day postage designs.  Most have been metered and some are un-used.

What first drew me into postage art was the historical interest it held for me.  I was fascinated to think that each individual metered stamp had its’ own story.  Where did it come from and where did it go?  Who were the people involved?  What message did it hold?  Was it a letter of love lost?  Expression of sympathy?  Or simply conveying the weather?  What stories were told?

Some of the stamps are from countries that had been occupied by other nations that now hold new names and identities.  In a way our world history is being told through these stamps.

No doubt some the the worlds finest art, from De Vinci to Van Gogh to the Quilts of Gees Bend, has been put to stamps, along with countless other beautiful and telling designs and images, but for me, it is the historical aspect of the stamps themselves that has kept me enamored with this work.

Hope you enjoy them.
